Colorful Emotions

Some kids have a hard time communicating how they're feeling, especially when facing new challenges. If your child is in this situation, try using colors to help them identify different feelings and emotions.

  1. Create six circles of different colors on a piece of paper. Write the words or create a picture representing an emotion in each one.
    • Yellow: Happy
    • Blue: Sad
    • Green: Calm
    • Black: Scared
    • Pink: Love
    • Red: Angry
  2. Go through each color with your child and talk about when you might feel each color.
  3. Each morning or when your child's emotions overwhelm them, ask them what color they feel. Then start the conversation around what made them feel this way.

Feelings can be hard to describe. Studies have shown that children find it easier to associate emotions to different color schemes. This allows them to talk more easily about their feelings and identify them if they're struggling.
